IN THE HOUSE

In The House: Being At Home With God is not a casual title. Sometimes we think of being at home as a phrase that speaks of being comfortable. This is not about being comfortable with God in our house like we might be relaxed and comfortable with a friend in our home. It is not kick off your shoes, put on your pajamas and “get real” kind of thing. For too long we have tried to domesticate God and it will never happen. C.S. Lewis reminded us in his classic Narnia series, “Aslan is not a tame Lion.”

What are we talking about then? We are talking about fulfilling the passion of every Spirit-filled believers life to “know Him and the power of His resurrection.” We are talking about experiencing the passion of David who exclaimed, “One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life” (Psalm 27:4). In the revelation from Scriptures concerning the House of God we can learn what it is really like to be at Home with God.

We find the House of God as a phrase and concept mentioned first in Genesis 28:11 by Jacob when he falls asleep on a barren hillside with a stone as a pillow. Later God would give Moses a pattern for a “portable” tabernacle that would be constructed to move with the children of Israel in their journeys. Once in the land God allowed Solomon to build a permanent and beautiful temple. The Babylonians destroyed this temple in 586 B.C.  Seventy years later the Jews in captivity would begin to return to Jerusalem and rebuild it. Later in the time of Jesus Herod would give the money for the construction of an elaborate temple that was 46 years in the process of being built when Jesus began His public ministry. The Romans destroyed this Temple in 70 A.D. As the Christians expanded and grew in number and influence they met in houses, open fields and catacombs to worship God. Paul would refer to these gatherings as the House of God:

1 Timothy 3:15

but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

Therefore, both before the structures of the Tabernacle and the Temple(s) and after their destruction we find the phrase, ‘House of God.” The great anointed and spiritual discourse on the history of Israel by the deacon Stephen before he was martyred as recorded in Acts 7 reminds us:

Acts 7:48–50

However, the Most High doesn’t live in temples made by human hands. As the prophet says, ‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. Could you build me a temple as good as that?’ asks the Lord. ‘Could you build me such a resting place? Didn’t my hands make both heaven and earth?’

In this series of messages we are speaking of the House of God as manifested to us in three dimensions or perspectives

            1. Your Body – God’s House

1 Corinthians 6:19–20

Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

            2. Your Home – God’s House

Psalm 127:1

Unless the Lord builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the Lord guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain.

The Home you build is not simply the real estate where you have a dwelling. Rather, It is the influence of your house through your life, ministry and children and their future partners, etc.

            3 Your Church – God’s House

1 Peter 2:5

you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

We should know that our church is not the building in which we meet. The church is the people. Destroy the building and the church is still the church. Technically, our meetinghouse is wood, hay and straw, brick, concrete wiring etc. But when the people of God are assembled to worship it becomes the house of God.Therefore, God is building is house in my body (i.e. life) and in my home and in the place I gather to worship and serve.
